THE SOCIAL ROLE OF UKRAINIAN COMMUNITIES: HISTORY AND PRESENT TIME

The urgency of the research of the Ukrainian community, the specification of its role in social transformations is caused by the search for effective strategies of social development of our state.
Target setting. The methodological basis of the study was the historical and comparative approaches that allowed the community to be analysed as a complex, multidimensional and, at the same time, holistic historical phenomenon, as well as to compare its social role at various stages of the social pathway of Ukrainians.
Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. In authors’ opinion, a significant methodological potential has a post-classical research paradigm in which the focus is on problems of imbalance and instability of a social organization. In particular, the realization of the goal set in the study is promoted by social constructivism, developed by American sociologists P. Berger and T. Luckmann.
Uninvestigated parts of general matters defining. In the context of the issues considered, the social constructivist approach creates opportunities for a comprehension of the social significance of  the community as a construct of social life, a construct of orientation in the life-practical situations of social existence.
The research objective. The application of the sociocultural approach contributed to the analysis of the community's public functions through the prism of national cultural development.
The statement of basic materials. The role of Ukrainian communities in various bifurcation points of the social self-organization of the Ukrainian people is analysed. The thesis is based on the fact that, while being between the East and the West, experiencing external influence, the Ukrainian lands developed their own, specific world orientations, which influenced the social practices of their selforganization.
Conclusions. It is established that the social role of the community is revealed in the influence on the processes of state-building and cultural-civilization identification.

Keywords: community; government; local self-government; cultural and civilization identification; democracy; social transformation; social self-organization.
